Why Community Engagement Needs to Change – And How We’re Doing It Differently

Community engagement is broken.
Too often, it's reduced to tick-box exercises and one-off surveys. Residents are left feeling unheard, over-consulted, and underwhelmed. As someone who’s worked across regeneration projects, youth programmes, and with councils and developers alike—I’ve seen it first-hand.
At Crowd Magnet, we believe in doing things differently.
What’s going wrong?
Many developers and local authorities come to the table with good intentions, but consultations often fall flat. Why? Because they’re rushed, inconsistent, or led by people who don’t fully understand the communities they’re trying to reach.
This creates what is known as “consultation fatigue” - where people feel like they’re constantly being asked for their opinions but see no real outcomes. It leads to distrust and disengagement, especially in communities already marginalised or under-represented.
Our approach: Connection over checkbox
We centre our work on four core values: authenticity, connection, trust, and transparency.
That means:
Engaging early, not just when the planning application is due.
Reaching people in ways that suit them—whether that’s WhatsApp messages, doorstep conversations, or community events.
Using local storytellers, artists, and youth leaders to co-create the engagement journey.
We don’t just consult—we listen, build relationships, and create spaces where people feel safe enough to speak their truth.
A real-world example: Camley Street
In Camden, we’re working with young people to document local stories during a major regeneration scheme. This isn’t about tokenising youth voices. It’s about centering them in how the area is shaped.
From community events to skill-building workshops, we’re making sure people aren’t just included - they’re empowered.
Why this matters for your project
Authentic engagement isn’t just good PR—it’s good practice. It leads to:
Smoother planning approvals
Better long-term relationships
Reduced risk of local opposition
And ultimately, developments that people are proud of.
If you’re a developer, council, or organisation tired of the same old consultation methods- let’s talk.
Let’s reimagine community engagement together.
